Abstract
Psychology
There were two aims to this study. The first was to examine how the interactional model of depression applies to couples coping with cancer. The second was to examine whether social problem-solving is an individual variable that is related to how partners respond to the depressive symptoms that people with cancer experience. Sixty couples participated in this cross-sectional study. The hypotheses were tested with a series of hierarchical multiple regression analyses. The results showed that the interactional model was applicable. Cancer patients' negative affect was related to the negative responses (i.e., negative affect, hostility, negative behaviors) of their partners. However, the severity of the cancer patients' depressive symptoms was not related to the negative responses of their partners. Furthermore, the results showed that the partners' positive problem orientation, one component of the problem-solving process, moderated the relationship between patient negative affect and partner negative affect. However, other components of the problem-solving process did not moderate these relationships. Research and clinical implications are discussed.
