Liquid phase photografting of vitamin K-1 and hydroquinone (HQ) were carried out onto medical grade polypropylene (PP) films with the aid of benzophenone (BP), and the effects of surface properties on transformed CHO-K1 cell adhesion as well as on the migrational behavior of human melanoma cells were investigated. The effects of various reaction conditions and the changes in physicochemical properties of the surface of PP were determined by EA, FMIR, and surface tension measurements. The addition reaction of polypropylene to the unsaturated double bonds in vitamin K-1 were studied using FTIR and FTNMR. The free radical content of the samples due to enzymes redox reactions were examined by ESR. As BP concentration was increased, the graft yields for the VK-1-g-PP and HQ-g-PP reaction were increased up to specific point and then decreased. Graft yield was increased with irradiation time and dose concentration and then leveled off. The surface tension of samples increased with the increase in graft yield. The free radical content of the samples due to enzymes redox reactions were examined by ESR. The adhesion of CHO-K1 cells on the surfaces of samples was increased with the increase in graft yield of the samples. Primary and metastatic human melanoma cells showed an enhanced migrational behavior toward the prepared samples in this study.
