Abstract
Psychology
Clinical experts have indicated that individuals identified as perpetrators of sexual assault often deny their sex-offending behavior and that such denial hinders successful treatment. However, the construct of denial has not been systematically defined or examined empirically regarding its impact on treatment or risk of reoffense of sex-offending behavior. Recent research has produced evidence indicating that denial of sex-offending behavior may be amendable to treatment. Despite these findings, many treatment programs will not accept sex offenders who deny their sex offenses. This situation is unfortunate, in that those who deny their sex-offending behavior may be most in need of treatment. Terms such as distortion, minimization, and lying have been used interchangeably with denial, creating problems regarding consistency or replication of research findings. Moreover, the lack of a clear definition of denial in the sex offender literature continues to serve as an obstacle regarding treatment research. This project involved the development and initial psychometric evaluation of a denial questionnaire. The questionnaire is designed to provide an operational and systematic definition of denial, such that the construct may be studied empirically.
