Abstract
There exists a significant knowledge gap in the availability, type, and content of prenatal patient education and training programs for high-risk pregnancy mothers. Areas needing more support for this vulnerable population of mothers are reducing their stress, managing expectations of bedside parenting, and introducing mothers to the environment of the neonatal intensive care unit. An additional void exists in the consistency, acknowledgement and remediation of prenatal stress and anxiety, in this vulnerable population which constitutes 10% of all pregnancies in the United States. Although there is no way to predict how gestation, labor, or delivery will transpire for even the healthiest women, as all pregnancies and deliveries present their own set of risks, the high-risk pregnancy mother already knows the threat to her health and that of her child. The purpose of this study is to answer the questions: "Is there a standard of care for prenatal education and training programs for high-risk pregnancy mothers; Would a prenatal orientation program have been useful and beneficial in preparing them for the stress and environment of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU); and What components of a NICU orientation program do they consider most valuable?" A questionnaire was designed to assist in answering these questions. One-hundred and sixteen mothers having experienced a high-risk pregnancy completed a 25-question online survey which collected non-self-identifying demographic data and assessed the availability of the nature and extent of high-risk pregnancy specific prenatal classes that prepared them for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit environment and offered anxiety-reducing programming. The survey was able to make a rudimentary comparison between the availability of high-risk pregnancy prenatal classes who completed the survey from the United States with those of other countries.
