Abstract
Psychology
Urban women with HIV, the fastest growing subgroup of persons infected with the virus in the United States, potentially face numerous stressors (e.g., health issues, care giving, poverty). The current study sought to examine the relationship between stressors and health, as well as the potentially buffering role of problem-solving skills, within this population. One hundred and twenty-five women participated in a series of self-report questionnaires. Results demonstrated stressors predicted greater negative affect and physical symptoms. In addition, certain aspects of maladaptive problem-solving skills were predictive of greater psychological distress. However, problem-solving skills were not demonstrated to moderate the relationship between stressors and health. Clinical and research implications of the study are discussed.
