Abstract

Identity (Psychology)--Social aspects Group identity Uncertainty--Economic aspects Business Administration
Institutions and companies across many industries, such as those in the management consulting, technical, healthcare, education and legal sectors, have used knowledge-intensive teams for years to accomplish their organizational objectives. A team's identity, along with its ability to integrate knowledge, have both been associated with better team performance. In the early months of 2020, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the vast majority of employees worked on-site, with nearly two-thirds having never worked from home. By May 2021, the approximately six percent of employees working from home had risen to 35 percent. This research aimed to study and provide insights about the real-world effects that virtual work environments have on knowledge intensive teams' identities, knowledge integration and performance. The data used for this research was collected through an online survey. The sample did not allow for team level of analysis and the focus of this research pivoted to an individual-level study, analyzing perceptions about the spectrum of virtuality, team identity, and uncertainty. A significant relationship was found to exist between virtuality and team identity. Although their effects were mixed, both uncertainty and tenure were found to moderate the relationship between virtuality team identity. These findings are significant because they support the perspective that virtuality can be operationalized as a continuous variable, vice one of many dichotomous dimensions that have previously been ascribed to teams.
