The dynamics of dye lasers in the presence of transverse effects is studied in an experimental context. The technical aspects for the design of a high stability dye laser and its theoretical principles are presented. Different pattern structures and non-linear effects are shown in a series of complete measurements. Transverse effects, from steady state patterns to patterns with spatio-temporal dynamics, are discussed. Simple and complex spatial intensity distributions are covered as well. New aspects in the dynamics of dye lasers are shown and discussed in terms of simple models. Throughout the work image techniques were used to acquire spatial intensity distributions of the dye laser output. The computer programs developed for this data acquisition are presented.
