Abstract
This phenomenological study analyzed the lived experiences of immigrant youth to understand how they make meaning of their educational experiences in suburban American high schools. The problem that exists is that research in the field of immigration and assimilation in the United States rarely takes into account youth experiences, and even less frequently from the perspective of suburban high schools in the Midwest. This study aims to fill that gap with a focus on how schooling impacts youth experiences. Segmented assimilation theory prescribes that the situation and overall outcome of the new wave of immigrants is dependent upon which segment of society that each enters. Segmented assimilation suggests that immigrant youth have different lived experiences in America. Schooling can be a mitigating factor for youth. There is limited research on immigrant youth experiences in suburban, high-SES, Midwest contexts. The purpose of this study is to contribute to filling that gap. This study answers the following research questions: 1) How do immigrant youth perceive their race, class, gender, and immigrant status shaping their school experiences? 2) What challenges and opportunities do immigrant youth perceive as most influential in shaping their school experiences? How do they navigate those challenges and opportunities? 3)How do immigrant youth describe educational success? What do they attribute to their own personal success? This phenomenological study collected data by one-to-one semi-structured interviews and a participant focus group. By using phenomenological research techniques and methods that align with the interpretive paradigm, the researcher sought to gain an understanding of the phenomenon of segmented assimilation and how it has impacted the lives of the students at a large suburban high school in Ohio.
