Abstract

Astin's involvement educational model One-to-one intensive tutoring program Out-of-school time programs Standardized assessments Rising Stars Program
The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of a one-to-one intensive tutoring program in English and Mathematics on improving English learners' test scores on standardized assessments like the Pre-Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT). The program of interest in this study is called The Rising Stars Program and is designed based on Astin's involvement educational model. The program features repeated daily sessions between coaches and English learners working on students' deficiencies in mathematics and English. Central Academy, the charter school, administering the program in Ann Arbor Michigan supplies archival anonymous data on the 2022-2023 cohort of participants. Statistical analysis featuring hypothesis testing and descriptive measures will be conducted to compare participants' and non-participants' scores on the PSAT to determine whether the program carried an effect or had no impact on performance. Program activities participation data will be used to evaluate Astin's involvement model suggesting that increases in engagement, attendance, and participation lead to observed tangible improvements in students' performance. The study supplies researchers and educators with new evidence on the effectiveness of out-of-school time programs on English learners' academic improvements.
