The purpose of this research was to assess whether a relationship exists between burnout and emotional intelligence among special education teachers, via a sample of special education teachers from Virginia. One overarching question guiding this research was: What is the relationship between emotional intelligence and special education teacher burnout? This question will be further explored by separating it into two sub-questions: What is the relationship between perceived stressors and burnout among special education teachers? and What is the relationship between perceived stressors and emotional intelligence among special education teachers? The second guiding question was: Which component of emotional intelligence do special education teachers identify as valuable in managing stress and reducing burnout? Data was collected through the use of a Convergent Parallel Mixed Methods Design using a mix of interviews, the Maslach Burnout Inventory Educators Survey (MBI-ES), and the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT).
