Abstract
The purpose of this qualitative study is to identify the key characteristics that promote effective leadership and teacher performance on the secondary school level in a central New Jersey district. This ethnographic study will utilize in-depth, individual interviews to provide insight and answers to the research problem and research questions. The primary research question of this study is: what is the collective thinking of educators regarding the key characteristics of effective leadership and its effect on teacher performance? The sub-research questions include: From the perspective of the school leaders, what key characteristics promote effective leadership and teacher performance? From the perspective of the teachers, what key characteristics promote effective leadership and teacher performance? The researcher recognizes it is essential to collaborate with others to understand their frame of reference; therefore, the interview process will be pertinent to the problem being addressed and to the participants.
