Abstract

Teenagers Cannabis Marijuana Health education
Background: Increases in the use of cannabis by adolescents is a public health concern. A contributing factor to the upward trend in use includes missed opportunities by health care providers for educating adolescents on the health effects of cannabis use. Purpose: This DNP practice improvement project was conducted to determine if evidence-based training is effective for improving health care provider knowledge, belief, and confidence communicating with adolescent patients about the health effects of cannabis use. Methods: The participants attended the educational session and completed a modified 18-item Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) Questionnaire on cannabis both before (pre) and after (post) exposure to the training. A paired t-test was conducted to determine if significant improvements in evidence-based knowledge, beliefs, and confidence. Findings: Evidence-Based Knowledge increased 40% from 18.93 to 26.47 (t=7.54; p=.000); Beliefs by 14.3% from 22.8 to 26.6 (t=3.8; p=.009) and Practice Confidence 28% from18.6 to 25.86 (t= 6.64, p=.000). The total KAP scores increased from 60.3 to 79.7 points (t=6.0; p=.000) on a possible score range between18 to 90 points. Conclusion: The findings strongly suggest that the education intervention was successful with significantly increasing awareness on all three KAP domains. Educational workshops should be considered as a standard part of training practitioners treating the adolescent population. Further studies on the impact of evidence-based training with larger sample sizes from diverse healthcare facilities are highly recommended.
