Abstract
This phenomenological study allowed readers to gain a deeper understanding of the workforce journey of adults with ID. This information can inspire improvements in employment initiatives for adults with ID, as well as promote inclusion and competitive employment programs. The participants within this study informed the readers why living and working in an integrated community setting is important. The information collected within this study can inspire the impact of the current employment approaches along with promoting inclusion and competitive employment programs. Analyzing this phenomenon uncovered the complicated and challenging employment process through commonality of participants and their team members. There were 4 sets of participants within this study: 3 adults with an intellectual disability, 3 job coaches also known as employment specialists, 3 hiring managers and 4 support team members. Each participant shared their personal and/or professional experience which was captured through semi-structured interviews. The findings from the study identified the perception of limitation as it relates to family members and hiring managers. The results of this study also demonstrated the significance of cultivating relationships through collaboration, which can lead to successful employment. Identifying the gaps that exist between employers and potential employees allowed room for addressing barriers and identifying the appropriate support needed for successful employment integration.
