Exploring faculty-led short-term study abroad programs to understand the alignment between faculty and institutional goals for internationalization at a higher education institution: a qualitative case study
Although internationalization has become a strategic priority in higher education, existing research has largely emphasized institutional rationales while under examining faculty motivations. This qualitative case study explored the alignment between institutional and faculty goals for internationalization through faculty-led short-term study abroad programs at a small, public university in the northeastern United States. Data were collected through background questionnaires, semi-structured interviews with administrators, study abroad coordinators, and faculty, and document analysis of strategic plans, mission statements, and course syllabi. Findings showed the institution prioritized preparing students for global careers, enhancing competitiveness, and advancing internationalization through student mobility. Faculty shared these commitments, but their motivations were more varied and included disciplinary interests, opportunities for professional development, and modest financial incentives. While both groups valued global education, several misalignments emerged. Faculty-led programs often reflected individual or disciplinary priorities, while institutional leaders emphasized measurable outcomes tied to strategic objectives. Limited incentives, communication gaps, and equity barriers further complicated alignment. The study concludes that faculty-led short-term study abroad programs can meaningfully contribute to institutional internationalization, but only when faculty motivations are effectively integrated with institutional priorities. Strengthening alignment requires clearer communication of goals, increased recognition and incentives for faculty, and broader integration of internationalization into the curriculum beyond mobility initiatives. This study underscores the central role of faculty in advancing global engagement and offers practical implications and recommendations for institutions seeking to strengthen internationalization efforts.
