Exploring graduate school enrollment decisions among DHH and hearing students: factors, influences, and implications

Abstract
This study aimed to address a gap in understanding the enrollment decisions of both Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students and hearing students in DHH-related fields, such as audiology, Deaf education, social work, and sign language interpretation, at Gallaudet University. Despite the growing demand for professionals in these areas, only 5% of DHH individuals pursue higher education, and even fewer continue to graduate studies, resulting in persistent economic disparities (Garberogolio et al., 2019). Hearing students also often overlook Gallaudet, missing out on opportunities for cultural immersion and specialized training in ASL and Deaf culture. Using phenomenological interviews, this research explored the motivations, challenges, and decision-making processes of both DHH and hearing students. The study found that participants viewed Gallaudet's graduate programs as transformative, offering opportunities for identity development, social advocacy, and a high return on investment. Participants also navigated various systemic barriers, such as financial and cultural obstacles, often with the aid of supportive networks and university resources. External factors, notably the COVID-19 pandemic, further influenced their choices by prompting a reassessment of career goals and increasing interest in graduate education as a strategic response to job market uncertainties. These findings offer valuable insights for higher education leaders to develop targeted enrollment strategies and create a more inclusive environment that better prepares students for the evolving workforce in DHH-related fields.
