Intimate partner violence (IPV) Female physicians Whole-person care Anambra state Southeast Nigeria
This study explored the perceptions of female physicians of Anambra state, Southeast (SE) Nigeria, who have experienced or are currently experiencing Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and their ability to provide whole-person care to their patients. There are thirty-six states in Nigeria divided into six geopolitical zones. SE Nigeria is the smallest of the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria, consisting of five states (Abia, Anambra, Ebony, Enugu, Imo) and compromising approximately 18% of the Nigerian population. This study was limited to Anambra state, one of the SE states. This study used the shorter version of the reliable and validated Composite Abuse Scale (CAS) to screen for IPV among female physicians in Anambra state, SE Nigeria. The survey did not contain any information that could identify the participants, and it was anonymously delivered and collected electronically using Google form through the Physicians WhatsApp forum. The response to the survey was poor. Twenty participants from Anambra state responded to the survey. 15% of respondents from Anambra reported that IPV had affected their ability to provide whole-person care, while the majority (85%) did not. A chi square analysis was performed using the variables "fear of partner" and "the ability to provide whole person care" and it showed a significant association between fear and the ability to provide care.
