The purpose of this explanatory qualitative case study was to explore teacher understanding of student motivation in order to discern if K12 teachers are adequately prepared to motivate the students they serve. This research aims to inform educator preparation programs and professional development initiatives about the need for teacher use of neuroscience-backed motivation strategies in the classroom. The overarching question guiding this research was: To what extent are teachers prepared to adequately motivate their students?" To further guide this research, the following sub questions were considered: How do teachers understand the neuroscientific basis of student motivation?; and What preparation do teachers feel they need to effectively implement student motivation techniques? Data was collected using a survey and semi structured individual interviews of current teachers.
