Exploring the Experiences of Accounting Graduates Who Have Participated in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program in Northeast Pennsylvania: A Case Study
Education--Accounting Accounting--Study and teaching (Higher) Accounting--Study and teaching (Graduate) Service learning Business Education
Service learning has proven to be an effective pedagogical tool to prepare students to be successful during their college studies and well beyond graduation. For years, service learning has been utilized in disciplines such as social services, teaching, and nursing. While extensive research exists on the benefits of service learning to students in these disciplines, there is limited existing research on the benefits to students in the business fields, especially accounting. This qualitative exploratory single case study explored the experiences of accounting graduates who were involved in the IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program located in Northeast Pennsylvania during their undergraduate studies with the intent to provide accounting educators with an understanding of the effects that service learning can have on accounting students well beyond their time in the classroom.
