Abstract

Facilities management Gender dynamics Women's leadership Higher Education
Facilities Management (FM) is essential to the operational success of higher education institutions, yet leadership in the field remains predominantly male. Women continue to be underrepresented in FM leadership roles, facing unique organizational and gender-related challenges. This qualitative narrative case study explores the experiences of women in FM leadership within higher education, examining how they navigate professional expectations, institutional culture, and barriers to advancement. Guided by leadership theory and gendered organizational frameworks, the study employs semi-structured interviews and document review to capture participants' professional journeys, challenges, and leadership strategies. A narrative approach highlights the lived experiences of women shaping operational practices in a male-dominated field. Findings aim to inform higher education administration and Facilities Management literature by emphasizing the impact and value of women's leadership, moving beyond representation to actionable insights. The study contributes to understanding how inclusive leadership practices can enhance departmental operations, equity initiatives, and organizational culture in FM within higher education institutions.
