Abstract

Causal inference Intersectionality Life course epidemiology Distress (Psychology) Epidemiology--Social aspects Housing
Housing cost burden is a common exposure, but little is known about how families experience this over time while raising children, or how that experience affects those children in the early young adult life course. This study used group-based trajectory modeling and marginal structural modeling to identify trajectories of housing cost burden for families raising children and impacts of that burden on children's psychological distress and housing cost burden in young adulthood, as well as how distribution and impact differ as a function of race/ethnicity and gender. We identified 4 trajectories characterized by varying peaks of burden in different developmental periods of childhood (infancy, early childhood, adolescence), finding that families with Black women and Hispanic women as primary participants had highest odds of being assigned to burdened trajectories, followed by Black and Hispanic men and white women. We found impacts of adolescence burden on moderate and severe psychological distress, and of any burden on severe housing cost burden in young adulthood. Impacts were differential by race/ethnicity and by gender. We identify expansion of child tax credits and other family-based welfare services, introduction of housing price controls, and expansion of public housing as policy-relevant targets for intervention.
