Army leadership Empathy Taking care of soldiers Mental Health
This is a qualitative research study that explores junior and senior Army leaders' experiences navigating constraints in an organization to lead with empathy. The specificity of this study was intended to allow the researcher the means to gather data that could be applied to Army leadership tools of practice and even highlight a concern in where empathy is placed in current leadership requirement models. Moreover, this research seeks to understand how leaders express empathy in apathetic environments. Data was gathered using intensive interviews that explored the effects of leading with and without empathy; attaining more information on how leaders felt when receiving empathy as a subordinate and offering empathy as the leader. A total of 15 junior and senior level leaders were interviewed, representing the United States Army that ranges from over 165 different military occupational specialties. These informants were required to have at least 10 years of leadership experience, because they should have an incalculable amount of wisdom to offer through experiential learning. The grounded theory method was used to analyze the data that resulted in 10 focused codes and 3 aggregate dimensions describing leader experiences in the Army when dealing with offering empathy to subordinates. The findings provide insight into how leaders ultimately navigate constraints in highly regimented organizations to lead with empathy. This process further involved exploration specifically how, when, and why Army leaders chose to overcome constraints and still lead with empathy.
