Abstract
This design-based research study engaged 17 Black immigrant middle and high school youth in a 3-week summer podcasting program. The program featured three iterative identity workshops that examined the affordances of multiliteracies in supporting BIY navigation of dominant discourses in the broader society, K-12, and affinity spaces. The study, which was guided by the Critical Race Theory framework and the conceptual framework of Black Immigrant Identity Designing (BIID), explored amplifying BIY voices to influence essentializing positioning of their identities. Data were collected via focus groups, interviews, observations, and participant-created artifacts. These artifacts included journal reflections, digital art, and published podcast episodes. The findings demonstrate the strength of the BIID framework by highlighting the hybridity in participants' narratives of connection and identity (re)construction. Findings also point to the benefits of using multiliteracies, as enacted through podcasting, to create supportive third spaces for BIY. BIY enjoyed the program and acquired useful skills. They also experienced an increase in their critical consciousness and agentive advocacy. Additionally, they grew in their intercultural communicative competence, which strengthened their confidence and agency in using the platform to (re)position their identities in broader discourses. The study has implications for theory expansion surrounding BIY identity navigation. Recommendations for policy and pedagogy include the need for cultural humility to mitigate Pink Chickens biases, and the positioning of podcasting as critical classroom pedagogy. Recommendations also call for exploring policies supporting programming designed specifically for BIY.
