Abstract

Capnography End-tidal carbon dioxide Post-anesthesia care unit Nursing Education
Capnography monitoring in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) allows for early detection of respiratory compromise in postoperative patients. However, its use is often inconsistent due to a lack of education and training. The objective was to determine if providing education on capnography evidence, standards, and application to PACU staff increases their knowledge of end-tidal CO2 (ETCO2) monitoring. This quality improvement project provided PACU nurses with an educational intervention on capnography at the implementation site. A pretest and post-test assessed changes in staff knowledge. The anticipated outcomes included improved staff knowledge of capnography and a culture change regarding ETCO2 monitoring in PACU patients. Keywords: capnography, end-tidal CO2, post-anesthesia care unit, nursing education
