Abstract
Background: Prior to implementation of the risk assessment scheduling tool, antenatal scheduling assignments for new obstetrical patients and return obstetrical patients were random. The only criterion for scheduling was provider availability. Purpose: The aim of this quality improvement project was to incorporate an antenatal risk assessment scheduling tool at each prenatal visit in order to ensure proper scheduling with the appropriate provider (i.e., for low-risk pregnancies, a midwife; for high-risk pregnancies, an obstetrician). PICO: Does implementation of an antenatal risk assessment scheduling tool result in scheduling patients with the risk appropriate obstetrical provider compared to the current practice of antenatal scheduling based on provider availability? Methods: Implementation of this evidence-based project used a plan-do-check-act cycle. To derive data for comparison, the risk assessment scheduling tool was applied to data obtained from past obstetrical appointments with the certified nurse-midwife and obstetricians; these prior data had been compiled during the 4 weeks preceding the intervention.
