Abstract

Organizational culture Psychosocial factors Workplace belonging Workplace culture of health
Using a social ecological lens, this dissertation examines the intersection of workplace culture of health and workplace belonging. By proposing a new conceptual framework, using a convergent parallel mixed method design, and development of strategic actions to improve the organizational culture, this study recognizes that culture of health and belonging influences health and is influenced by employees' physical and social environment. The new proposed conceptual framework offers a more integrated understanding of the conditions that support WHP, providing a foundation for future empirical work that shapes the relationship between culture of health, belonging, and WHP through the themes of social connection, employee support, and employee voice and recognition. Using a convergent mixed methods approach, data on worker perceptions of workplace belonging and workplace culture of health compared, finding that leadership and peer support is associated with feelings of workplace belonging for participants and the constructs converge within the three themes found in the proposed framework. Lastly, this study provided recommendations for strategic actions and implementation strategies that can be taken to improve workplace belonging and culture of health through the enhancement of organizational safety. Understanding the intersection of culture of health and culture of belonging in the workplace will help researchers and workplace health promotion professionals understand how the interaction of environments and psychosocial factors influences employee health behaviors and has the potential to improve how workplace health promotion programs are designed, and employees are supported in the workplace through policies and physical and social environments.
