Abstract

Education, Elementary
This research is about investigating authentic learning experiences for elementary-age English learners' (ELs) engagement and attitudes toward learning. Oftentimes, EL instruction is siloed in its approach and is interdependent on what students are learning in the classroom. Moreover, due to potential limitations in language acquisition skills among English learners, teachers might not readily assume competence in their students' abilities. Consequently, English learners may be exposed to educational opportunities that are comparatively less enriching and authentic than those available to their native English-speaking counterparts. English learners deserve the opportunity to learn in an engaging manner with lessons that are filled with rigor and relevance. In a classroom where authentic and student-centered teaching methods are the norm, ELs have access to instruction that is relevant and meaningful. Lessons use critical thinking skills to solve real-world problems and students are provided an avenue to express their creativity in imaginative and thoughtful ways. This instrumental case study explores English learners' engagement and attitudes toward learning when provided with authentic learning experiences. Keywords: English learners, language acquisition, presume competence, authentic learning experiences, student-centered
