Abstract
Overutilization and waste in healthcare are increasingly being recognized as leading causes of physical and financial harm to patients in the United States. Unnecessary services are being touted as one of the main contributors to this waste. An examination of excessive costs and the overutilization of the US healthcare system was undertaken. This process commenced with a literature review of 30 studies utilizing GOOGLE Scholar and PUBMED applying excessive medical cost/healthcare-overutilization subject headings. The goal was to focus on the commonalities of these different studies to identify some of the major problems resulting in financial waste and overutilization. A web-based survey of 20 questions was developed to ascertain if the issue of healthcare waste and overutilization was covered in any medical school course or continuing education of current critical care attending physicians and fellows. There were also questions to gain insight if any education covered the negative aspects of this phenomenon in medical school or continuing education. Key Words: Healthcare Overutilization, Excessive Medical Costs.
