Abstract
The purpose of this sequential mixed methods study was to identify key leadership adaptability capacities, skills, and abilities necessary for a junior enlisted naval sailor to transition effectively to senior leadership roles, beyond those codified and taught in apprentice, journeyman, and senior enlisted levels. The research pursued to provide insight into what executive-level leadership abilities, skills, and tools are critical for junior enlisted naval leaders to embrace as they transition to a senior enlisted naval leader. The primary research question that guides this study is, "If junior enlisted naval leaders are to be successful in their transition to senior leadership positions, what requisite leadership and adaptability skills, and tools must be developed to prepare them?" To further guide the research, the researcher posed the following questions: a) What are the requisite leadership and adaptability skills needed for junior enlisted naval leaders to ensure success once transitioned higher-level leadership roles?, b) What established senior leadership traits and behaviors should be clearly conveyed to junior enlisted naval leaders early in their careers that will increase their raw leadership abilities?, c) What can senior enlisted naval leadership members adapt in their daily leadership roles to ensure junior enlisted leaders are prepared to assume increased responsibilities that are unique to the U.S. Navy? The conceptual framework of this interpretive mixed methods study consists of three streams of theory, research, and practice. Keywords: adaptability, leadership, character, executive leader, military, and credibility.
