Abstract

Stepfamilies Grit Transformational leadership Trust
This study examined the phenomenon of transformational leadership through the lens of educational leaders who have experience with the blended family system and the influence that experience has had on the educational leaders' understanding and style of leadership. The purpose of this study was to discover the components understood to be most crucial in developing relationships with others, by way of lived experiences, reflection, and accomplishment as perceived by the educational leader. Through deliberation of the educational leaders' experiences, coupled with the multiple viewpoints concerning the phenomenon studied, a better understanding of trust, grit, and leadership has materialized, leading to new questions. Through the process of individual interviews, followed by the use of in-vivo coding, four themes were identified: (a) Conscientiousness, (b) Resiliency, (c) Communication, and (d) Proactive. From these themes, four results were then identified: educational leaders from the blended family system value relationships, educational leaders see communication as a key element of their success, educational leaders reflect on personal experience to develop their leadership and understanding of others, and educational leaders have grit. Recommendations were presented for consideration that would guide educational leaders as well as local education agencies to incorporate a sensible approach to continued growth and sustained success. Recommendations included professional development related to cultural understanding and societal and social norms, understanding the needs of the community served, the importance of having critical conversations, engaging in establishing and maintaining relationships with others, as well as the educational leader's role in identifying and developing future educational leaders.
