Abstract
Background: Healthcare institutions are urged to identify factors associated with nursing dissatisfaction to mitigate increasing turnover rates within the nursing profession, giving special consideration to the current state of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Occupational stress has been identified as a significant contributing factor for nursing dissatisfaction. Purpose: The purpose of this project is to evaluate the effects of a stress management program on hospital nurses on a selected unit with a high Registered Nurse turnover rate. Methods: This project will implement a stress management program for hospital nurses, chosen by a voluntary leadership team of RNs on a selected hospital unit using a PDSA cycle approach. Data collected includes demographics and surveys pertaining to current stress level, confidence in stress management techniques, and interest in learning stress management techniques. Data will be analyzed via descriptive statistics. Pre and post-intervention responses will be analyzed using a paired t-test. Results: The BREATHE stress management program was selected. Results showed improvement in current stress levels and levels of confidence in personal stress management techniques. An increased interest in learning additional stress management techniques was also noted. Participants expressed that they felt that they could use the stress management techniques learned in the selected program, with a mean response of 63/100. Participants also expressed that they would feel more satisfaction with their job if the organization offered a similar program, with a mean response of 60/100. Implementing an occupational stress management program is a sustainable and cost-effective solution for healthcare institutions to curb the rising RN turnover rates.
