Disruption Healthcare Pandemics Telehealth Medical Education
The purpose of this research study was to explore the disruption the COVID-19 pandemic caused to medical education and patient care. This study utilized a hermeneutic, phenomenological design to explore the lived experiences of clinician-educators who instructed medical students and treated patients during the pandemic. The researcher drew from the perceptions of those in the medical community who were directly affected by this worldwide disruption to answer the research questions (RQs). The RQ were (a) What are the differences of the lived experiences of medical school clinician-educators who taught students and treated patients before and during the pandemic disruption? And (b) What are the implications of what was shared about the pandemic disruption that can inform change for potential future disruptions obstacles and what adaptive strategies were useful to overcome obstacles? Through interviews and a focus group with clinician-educators, the data uncovered how the pandemic disrupted medical education and patient care, adaptive strategies used to overcome these obstacles, and which of the strategies were successful and which presented challenges. A careful and thorough analysis of the data yielded 23 codes, three themes (prepandemic medical education/patient care, pandemic disruption, and adaptation), and two subthemes (chaos and challenges). Direct quotes from the study participants illustrated their quick reactions to the COVID-19 disruption and how their resilience as experienced clinician-educators helped them adapt to the chaos and challenges of unanticipated disruption.
