Needs assessment Communication Barriers Pregnant women Nursing
Objective: Language barriers and cultural sensitivity challenge healthcare providers in providing prenatal care to the diverse population of Non-English Speaking Pregnant Migrant Women in Philadelphia. This project seeks to find out from a multidisciplinary group, who serve this growing population, what they need to optimize their ability to provide care. Design: A qualitative needs assessment, utilizing focus group discussions and questions from two focus group sessions with the key stakeholders: physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, certified nursing assistants, social workers, case managers, lead clinical assistants, secretaries, and community paraprofessionals. Setting: Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Nationalities Service Center Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Participants: A total of 19 key stakeholders participated in two focus group sessions. Results: Key stakeholders identified barriers and facilitators for comprehensive, holisitic, and quality prenatal care to migrant non-English speaking pregnant migrant women. Conclusion The views of the key stakeholders about improving and promoting quality prenatal care and safe motherhood were identical when they were given an opportunity to discuss the issues. Hence, the key stakeholders' comments and recommendations provided have identified the key elements for the development of a future prenatal program.
