Abstract
Behavioral Sciences Nutritional Status Clinical Psychology Mental Health Nutrition Disorders
Consideration of the behavioral effects of nutritional status is explored from a biochemical perspective. The biochemical basis of behavior is presented with implications for nutritional impact on the process of neurotransmitter synthesis. Nutritional effects on behavior are discussed as functions of dietary insufficiency, dietary excess, faulty metabolism, dietary imbalance, and food allergy. The interaction effects of diet and psychology are emphasized. Guidelines are presented for clinicians who wish to incorporate nutritional awareness into the treatment of psychological symptoms.
