Remanufacturing Industrial management Information asymmetry Contracting out Marketing
My thesis investigates "co-opetitive outsourcing", i.e., the special case of a contract manufacturer (CM) having a dual role as an upstream manufacturer and a downstream competitor to the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). The latter role is referred to as CM encroachment. Outsourcing facilitates CM encroachment by enabling a CM to gain expertise in building the OEM's products, via the well-known "learning-by-doing" effect. Motivated by this context of outsourcing under competition, my doctoral research focused on three essays. My first essay, "Can Learning by Doing Hurt Profit? The Case of Outsourcing and Supplier Encroachment", models the influence of CM learning rate on the long-term CM/OEM profits under different underlying market conditions. In my second essay, "Price and Service Competition between an Encroaching Contract Manufacturer and an OEM", I study how CM encroachment changes price and/or service levels for OEM/CM products under different supply chain competition structures. My third essay, "Competition in Remanufacturing when Information is Asymmetric", examines a different topic, remanufacturing in outsourcing. Specifically, I assess the impact of private information on the profits of the OEM and Independent Remanufacturer (IR), and how this in turn influences the balance between new manufacturing and remanufacturing products.
