Sugammadex Emend Hormonal contraception Post-anesthesia care unit Patient education Quality improvement Anesthesia Standardized protocols
This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement project addressed inconsistent perioperative patient education regarding the effects of Sugammadex and Emend on hormonal contraception at a regional medical center. The guiding PICOT question examined whether implementation of a standardized protocol and educational intervention would improve post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) nurse knowledge and increase the number of patients receiving discharge education. Participants included PACU nurses and anesthesia providers (n = 31), with 31 completing paired pre- and post-intervention assessments. The intervention consisted of an evidence-based educational module and a workflow change using visual cues to identify eligible patients. Data were analyzed using a Wilcoxon signed-rank test due to non-normal distribution. Results demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in knowledge scores (Z = 3.65, p < .001), while changes in self-reported likelihood to provide education were not statistically significant (p = .056). Patient education delivery increased from zero cases pre-intervention to six during implementation, though full statistical comparison was limited by incomplete eligibility data. Findings suggest that targeted education significantly improves provider knowledge; however, workflow barriers persist in translating knowledge into consistent practice. This project supports the integration of standardized protocols and ongoing education to enhance patient safety and reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy. Future work should focus on electronic medical record integration to improve sustainability and adherence.
