Abstract
Religion and Medicine
The relationship between religious orientation and level of distress among adult cancer patients was explored. The primary hypothesis was that a significant relationship between religious orientation and level of distress would be found. Further, this relationship would be mediated by problem orientation. Additionally, the relationship between religious orientation and problem orientation was also investigated. Ninety-three participants for this study were recruited to complete five questionnaires that assessed the constructs of interest. Results revealed a significant correlational relationship between the measure of intrinsic religious orientation and two of the four measures of distress-hopelessness and death anxiety. A positive significant correlation between extrinsic religious orientation and negative problem orientation was also found. Overall, these results suggest the need to test competing models, in an effort to understand the relationship among these variables, and ultimately how religious orientation can be facilitated in a manner that promotes adjustment among cancer patients.
