Abstract

Psychological safety Resident physicians
Background and literature review: Psychological safety plays a vital role in helping people overcome barriers to learning and change in interpersonally challenging work environments. Psychological safety is described as the shared belief among a team, that it is acceptable to speak up, take risks, express ideas, and concerns without fear of negative consequences. Understanding the impact of psychological safety in the workplace can identify opportunities to improve workers' experience and increase comfort in speaking up. Speaking up is essential as it allows team members to feel safe at work, making it easier to be engaged and contribute to the team. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the actions resident physicians take related to psychological safety. Methods: This qualitative phenomenological study uses interview questions to identify themes among resident physicians' actions related to psychological safety. Results: Resident physician interviews provided information about what qualities of a team make them feel psychologically safe, how they bring up a new idea or concern to their team, if a mistake is made at work, how it is shared with their team, and the actions they take related to psychological safety among their team. Trust, honesty, and humility were qualities that made resident physicians feel psychologically safe among their team. Hierarchy, such as residency year, also played a role in how respected residents felt, which correlated with psychological safety. Conclusion: Trust and relationships play a large role in resident physicians' actions whether they speak up with a new idea or admit a mistake. Resident physicians shared several actions they take related to psychological safety, such as open communication, holding others accountable, and showing humility. These key factors determine whether resident physicians will speak up with a new idea or raise a concern to their team or leader, which ultimately has an impact on employee and patient safety in healthcare. Keywords: Psychological safety, resident physician.
