Self-reported potential community response to sexual offender release notification: an analysis of New Jersey's Megan's Law procedures

Through the use of vignettes and a self-report outcome questionnaire 300 discharged jurors from the New York Supreme Court, Bronx County, were asked to rate their potential willingness to participate in certain activities when notified that a released child sex offender plans to move into their neighborhood. Results indicate that the order in. which responses were presented to participants significantly affected their willingness to engage in potential activities. Specifically, participants reported an unwillingness to engage in proactive behaviors when notified of a non-sex offender and a willingness to engage in reactive behaviors when notified of a sex offender on the order 2 version of the 30 item questionnaire. These findings suggest that the order of responses had a priming effect on the way participants scored the questionnaire. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for future research and for policy.
