Abstract

Education, Higher Speech therapists--Training of Speech therapists--Practice Speech therapists--Licenses Speech therapists--Professional ethics
The American Speech-Hearing Association (ASHA) requires all SLPs who have a Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC-SLP) to earn at least two credit hours of professional development in "culturally responsive practices, diversity, equity, inclusion" or the like as a part of the three-year certification maintenance period that began January 1, 2022 (ASHA, 2022, para 4). UDL is used "to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn" (CAST, 2018). All educators must effectively create a culturally responsive environment, ensuring every student has a sense of belonging and can connect within the educational setting. This research study examined whether school-based speech-language pathologists (K-5 setting) along the East Coast of the United States of America had knowledge and understanding of inclusive education practices, such as The Universal Design for Learning Framework (UDL). After two cycles of coding, three themes and 10 sub-themes emerged which concluded these results: (1) SLPs are unintentionally using principles of UDL to meet the needs of their students; (2) most SLPs in the K-5 setting do not fully understand UDL as a framework; and (3) UDL training is not offered as a continuing education course option for SLPs. This study identified that there is a need for SLPs in the K-5 setting to have UDL training and that SLP's are ready for the training in educational practices that optimize teaching and learning to inform their scope of practice.
