Abstract
Intraoperative handoff between anesthesia providers is a daily occurrence within the operating room. Without standardization of patient handoff processes, critical patient information and intraoperative events can be missed. The breakdowns in communication due to distractions and a lack of standardized handoff processes pose a threat to patient safety. The use of the Anesthesia Care Handoff Tool can improve communication, increase information transfer between providers, and improve patient safety. This intervention aimed to decrease anesthesia provider stress and increase satisfaction surrounding handoff experiences. The project had 73 respondents for the pre-intervention survey and 24 respondents for the post-intervention survey. There was a total of n=11 matched pre- and post-intervention surveys for use in comparative analysis. The data showed no significant difference in stress scores receiving handoff with or without use of the Anesthesia Care Handoff Tool (Z = 20, p = 0.31) or giving handoff with or without use of the Anesthesia Care Handoff Tool (Z = 14.5, p = 0.93). A paired t-test was calculated to compare the mean satisfaction score of anesthesia providers without the use of the Anesthesia Care Handoff Tool (6.27) to the mean satisfaction score of anesthesia providers using the Anesthesia Care Handoff Tool (7.0). No statistically significant difference was found in satisfaction rates when using the tool (t (10) = 1.077, p = 0.307). The limited data showed that use of the Anesthesia Care Handoff Tool increased satisfaction levels during intraoperative handoff.
