Abstract
The purpose of this qualitative research was to explore the lived experiences of undergraduate students in the Northeastern region of the United States who endured Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and describe how their college experience had been impacted. The number of adverse experiences endured in early life and the severity of prolonged exposure to adverse conditions in childhood may contribute to serious mental health and physical health difficulties, negative health behaviors, and poor self-perception, while higher educational level attainment may reduce negative outcomes connected to experiencing childhood adversity and trauma and improve socioeconomic status in adulthood. Therefore, the intention of this qualitative research was to explore the impact adversity in childhood has on adult college students' health and well-being and to identify techniques and approaches to mitigate the effects of childhood adversity in adult students. The research sought to understand the undergraduate experience of those who had experienced 2 or more ACEs, with three research questions: 1. How do young adults who have experienced 2 or more ACEs and who are pursuing higher education describe their lived experiences as college students? a. How do young adults who have experienced 2 or more ACEs describe the barriers that exist to being successful in college? b. How do young adults who have experienced 2 or more ACEs describe the psychological and social mechanisms that have helped them be successful in college? c. How do young adults who have experienced 2 or more ACEs describe how ACEs impact their life in college (e.g., academic, social, health, financial)? Key words: adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), childhood trauma, academic success, mental health, public health
