Abstract
Healthcare organizations rely on Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), including nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs), to meet increasing patient care needs. Despite the recognized importance of mentoring for professional development and retention, many healthcare organizations struggle to engage APPs in mentoring. This quality improvement project was implemented to consider whether organizational strategies designed to support mentoring could increase participation in mentoring. A structured mentor training program developed by the Center for Improved Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) was utilized at a pediatric healthcare system. Key organizational leaders collaborated to implement the program though Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles. The training included didactic instruction, small-group discussion, and scenario-based learning focused on communication, professional development, equity and mentoring philosophy. This structured support led to more program enrollees, positive feedback from participants, and a significant improvement in the development of mentor-mentee pairings. This initiative contributes to the growing body of work highlighting that mentoring programs are most effective when healthcare organizations intentionally create structure, leadership support, and training opportunities for potential mentors. Keywords: mentorship, advanced practice providers, organizational support, mentor training
