In the course of a lifetime, four of every five American families will be touched by a stroke, and yet most people still think of stroke as an illness that strikes the very old. This misconception makes the stoke phenomenon an almost invisible, misunderstood, and underrated medical crisis. The methodology of autoethnography gives this researcher the opportunity to narrate the details of her own cerebral vascular accident (CVA) or stroke, giving medical personnel, caretakers, and other stroke survivors a look into the personal and cultural implications of the stroke experience. Of particular significance is the concept that a new identity must be formed after a stroke. The researcher, previously the Associate Dean of Lifelong Learning at Drexel University, has chosen to give the title true-life meaning and learn to live life in a new way.
