Abstract
Clinical Psychology
This dissertation explores the developmental vulnerability of the adoptive child and family within a closed system of adoption. The closed system of adoption permanently severs all ties between birth parents and child, seals all records, and gives little to no information about birth parents. It is the hypothesis of this dissertation that a closed system of adoption engenders denial, increased fantasy, extreme images of good and bad, and loyalty conflicts in the adoptee and adoptive family. Further, it is hypothesized that the search for ones biological parents can be an important step in understanding and resolving the difficulties that a closed system of adoption fosters.
