Abstract
The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate how people's values, motivations, and human capital affect the pursuit of sustainable entrepreneurial ventures. Furthermore, how do these factors impact the successful funding of a venture and the balance it tries to strike among economic, social, and environmental considerations? I argue and demonstrate that values and motivations are separate constructs when considering sustainable entrepreneurial ventures. My results indicate that values and motivations are not predictive of the type of sustainable venture or its success. I also maintain and show that entrepreneurs' work experience and advanced education negatively influence their intentions to launch a sustainable venture. In addition, my results indicate that gender affects the pursuit and success of entrepreneurial ventures, particularly for women, who attempt fewer entrepreneurial ventures and abandon them earlier than their male counterparts. There is also a threshold in the number of careers people have had that appears to predict their loss of interest in entrepreneurial endeavors. This threshold is lower for female entrepreneurs than for their male counterparts. Furthermore, female entrepreneurs are less likely to be successful in obtaining funding and resources for their ventures. Finally, prior entrepreneurial experience does not have a positive influence on the pursuit of sustainable entrepreneurial ventures. This finding contradicts the theories in prior studies.
