Abstract

Nursing--Practice Sleep disorders--Diagnosis Sleep Disorders
Barriers to care for the identification of poor function related to sleep impairment were identified in clinical practice and confirmed in the literature. This information was applied clinically in a symptoms review among patients seen in primary care clinic in an urban setting, using a nursing theoretical framework. The PROMIS assessment tool for sleep impairment was used to assess sleep impairment with an intervention pre and post assessment to improve sleep by an educational intervention for sleep hygiene. The comparison was made and measured by a T-test, per the PROMIS Assessment tool to identify if knowledge and self-care lifestyle changes could promote improved sleep and improved health. Key words: sleep impairment, daytime sleepiness, primary care sleep and function, PROMIS tool, memory loss, insomnia, sleep and health outcomes
