Abstract

Educational leadership Creative ability Teachers--Training of Teachers--Rating of National Association of Independent Schools Career development Teacher effectiveness Private Schools
The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of exceptional teachers in independent schools in order to better understand what made them exceptional and to identify commonalities among them. This study was guided by the following research questions: (1) what characteristics do senior administrators look for when identifying exceptional teachers?; and (2) how do teachers identified by senior administrators as exceptional describe the characteristics that make them exceptional? The conceptual framework that informed this study consisted of three literature streams of research, theory, and practice regarding: (a) independent schools; (b) teacher effectiveness; and (c) creative education.
