Abstract

Kindergarten readiness Preschool television programming Teacher beliefs Teachers perspectives
Kindergarten readiness refers to a child's development of skills and behaviors necessary for a successful transition to formal schooling. Existing research has shown the positive effects preschool television programming has on children but lacks research on the teacher's perception of kindergarten readiness skills in preschool television programming. The purpose of this mixed qualitative study was to examine how kindergarten teachers in both low-income and high-income schools express their beliefs and insights about kindergarten readiness skills in preschool television programming. The research questions that guided this study are: (a) Do kindergarten teachers believe that preschool television shows can be used to enhance kindergarten readiness skills? (b) If they do, which shows would they use? How and why? (c) If children were given these shows (Paw Patrol, Blippi, Helpsters, Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, Super Why!), do kindergarten teachers believe that they help enhance kindergarten readiness skills? How and why? (d) Is there a difference between the beliefs of high and low economic kindergarten teachers on whether preschool television shows enhance kindergarten readiness skills? Is there a difference in which shows they find would be effective? Data collected from semi-structured interviews and focus group yielded three overarching themes: Teamwork, Character Development, and Self-Determination. The study's findings supported three main results: High income teachers strive for academic excellence, low-income teachers strive for social-emotional excellence, and all preschool television programming teaches something. The findings of this study revealed that kindergarten teachers overwhelmingly agree that preschool television shows can be used to enhance kindergarten readiness skills. Training of teachers and creating a curriculum guide would provide teachers the support to implement preschool television programming into their lessons and classrooms.
