The main purpose of this study was to delineate homogeneous Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory profile subgroups within both male and female samples of headache patients in order to better understand the behavioral correlates associated with pain. In addition, the correlation between the newly created subgroups and analgesic intake was evaluated, and the relationship between these subgroups and headache type was investigated. The MMPI profiles from 186 female and 58 male chronic headache sufferers were subjected to a multivariate clustering procedure. This process assigned subjects to individual groups in such a manner as to maximize the similarity between observations within each subgroup. Those profile characteristics, or patterns, which significantly differentiated between the clusters or subgroups of headache patients, were identified.
