Economic sanctions Effectiveness of sanctions International trade Structural gravity Success of sanctions Trade sanctions
This dissertation includes three essays on economic sanctions. The first chapter introduces the Global Sanctions Data Base (GSDB), a new comprehensive dataset of economic sanctions that covers all bilateral, multilateral, and plurilateral sanctions in the world during the 1950-2019 period across three dimensions: type, political objective, and extent of success. In the second chapter, I quantify the effectiveness and success of trade sanctions to find that, while the economic impact of sanctions is strong and heterogeneous, it does not necessarily translate into success in achieving the sanctions' objectives. The third chapter estimates the evolution of the effects of trade sanctions over time. I provide evidence for the presence of negative and statistically significant anticipatory, contemporaneous, and post-sanction effects. The strength of the negative impact of sanctions increases with sanctions duration. In addition, I find that unilateral sanctions and especially US sanctions have had stronger negative impact on target states.
